Learning to Love Leah

Travel Beauty Favorites!

products i love march 2016 edit

I have recently been traveling nonstop which means I have been living out of a small suitcase and an even smaller makeup bag! Narrowing down your makeup collection is always a challenge but these are my all-star items that have made my life so much easier while being on the go!

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Soft Spoken – This liquid lipstick came in my March Ipsy bag which I just reviewed in my last blog which you can check out here. I love this rosey mauve color for a darker “my lips but better” color. It is perfect for every day as it lasts all day long without wearing off. It even lasted through all 3 meals! I have worn it everyday that I put on lipstick and I personally think it has complemented every outfit that I’ve worn very nicely!

Too Faced Love Flush Blush Palette – I have been dying to get my hands on a blush palette for months now so when I saw this beauty was for sale at Ulta I immediately added it to my cart! I plan on doing a whole blog devoted to this palette even though it was limited edition because all of the shades are permanently sold in full size packaging. While traveling I used them both as blushes and eyeshadows so they are extremely versatile and long lasting. Expect my review to be up within the month!

Almay Smart Shade Skin Tone Matching Makeup – I bought this CC cream on a whim because I was in desperate need of a foundation that wasn’t too orange for my skin tone. However, I fully intended on returning it once I could go out and buy the IT Cosmetics CC cream. Well, can you imagine my surprise when I ended up liking the Almay CC cream more than IT Cosmetics?! I have been so impressed with this foundation! It lasts all day, doesn’t stick to any dry patch, mixes well with moisturizer and has SPF. It comes out white and as you blend it in to your skin it changes to match your skin color. I have the shade light and it seems to match me very well. I get light coverage blending it in with my fingers and medium coverage if I use a beauty blender, which is what I do most days. It is now my go to foundation and I definitely recommend trying it if you are looking for a good CC cream!

Colourpop highlighter in Lunch Money – This highlighter was one of the first items I bought from Colourpop and is still one of my most used products. It gives the most beautiful luminous golden glow to this skin without being too harsh for lighter makeup days. I apply it with my ring finger to the tops of my cheekbones, tip of my nose and cupids bow. Since this highlighter is cream based, I do not apply powder over top of it because I feel as if it takes away the extra sheen, which is my favorite part!

Check out Lunch Money here

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water –  I have very sensitive skin and soaping up dry makeup remover wipes to take off my makeup was making my skin red, irritated and dry. I have heard many beauty gurus on YouTube rave about this particular micellar water so I decided to give it a try. I don’t know what is in this water that makes it so magical but it truly is amazing! You get so much product for $9.00 and I no longer have problems removing my eye makeup! It is gentle on my skin, doesn’t dry me out and never burns my eyes. I really wished that I had bought this product sooner. If you also dread taking off your makeup every night like I did please try this out!!

Check out Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water here

Wet N Wild Setting Spray – Still being pretty new into using makeup, I have never used a makeup setting spray. I only recently decided to buy this one because I noticed my foundation looking cakey. So far, I have really been loving setting my makeup! I spritz it all over my face (BEFORE MASCARA!! – trust me, if your mascara is not waterproof you will be left with a black, watery mess) about 7 to 9 times and then let it dry. It’s really that simple! I have noticed that more of my powder lasts until the end of the day and the added moisture is always a bonus.

Check out this Setting Spray here

Formula X nail polish in Revved Up – I received this nail polish in an Ipsy bag in December and fell in love with the formula. I work at a nursing home and this polish still lasts about a week on me. Plus, you can’t beat a good rose gold metallic color. Once this sample runs out I will definitely be purchasing the full size!

March Ipsy Glam Bag Review

march ipsy bag came edit

I am FINALLY back to blogging. This month has been crazy with traveling, school, family and work but everything is slowly winding down. I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate my return with this month’s Ipsy review as it was one of my most popular blogs and I get so excited to share what I got in my bag! This month Ipsy released three different bags and I received the one that is mint green. I am billed $10 on the 1st of every month and typically receive my bag by the 15th of the month. Below is my review of the 5 products I received!

  • I have linked the websites of the companies and any other products I have talked about in this blog! They are linked through the red “here”. Just click on it and it will take you to the site! 🙂

Living Proof – Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

When I saw this product was in my bag I was a bit disappointed as I use Ipsy for new makeup products. However, this dry shampoo really surprised me! Unlike most dry shampoos it actually seemed to remove some of the oil from my hair and add a bit of volume. It really did make a difference on my second day hair which I can’t say for any other dry shampoos so this one ended up being a great product!

Full Size: $22 for 4 ounces

Deluxe Sample: $9.90 for 1.8 ounces

Check out this dry shampoo from Living Proof here

Me Me Me – Loose Powder Brush

I am a big fan of trying out new makeup brushes and expanding my collection. I just recently started receiving brushes in my bag so I was excited to get this one. It wasn’t anything special, just a regular powder brush. I would compare it to the e.l.f. mineral powder brush which is only $3 and is available at most drugstores.

Full Size: £14 converted to $19.88

Check out the Me Me Me powder brush here

Global Beauty Care – Dead Sea Wash Off Mask

My boyfriend and I had a lot of fun doing this mask together! We both have very sensitive skin but neither of us had any bad reactions (burning, redness, dryness, ect.). It was quite relaxing but I didn’t noticed any difference in my skin after the few uses that I got out of this packet.

Full Size: $9.99 for 5 ounces

Sample Size: $1.99 for 1 ounce

Check out Global Beauty Care’s Dead Sea Mask here

TEMPTU – Warm Glow Bronzer

This product is made to be used in an airbrushing system for a more flawless makeup application. But, you can also apply this with a brush or beauty blender

Blended out – it left a shimmer which is difficult to see in this picture

I was surprised when I saw that I was going to be getting a bronzer in this month’s bag. I am very pale and most bronzers just look orange on me so I tend to stay away from them. This one is no exception. However, I think it would be good to mix into a foundation that is a shade or two lighter than your skin tone to add a bit of luminosity to your face. If I ever find a foundation that is too light I will be using this!

Full size: $27.50 for 1 fluid ounce

Sample Size: $6.88 for 0.25 fluid ounces

Check out TEMPTU bronzers here

NYX Cosmetics – Liquid Suede Creme Lipstick

IMG_1560 IMG_1565

With just one layer of product, this is the color that you get on your lips – so beautiful!

This is the brown color that I got when I layered the lipstick. It is a really pretty color if you like brown lips but it was a totally unexpected color change from the pink!

I’m already a huge fan of NYX, as I’m sure most other makeup lovers are, so this was the item I was most excited about. I received the shade Soft Spoken which is a beautiful mauve rose when applied in one coat and dries pretty matte within 10 minutes (also it doesn’t transfer unless you intentionally rub your lips!). When I tried to layer the color it began to look more brown and did not dry at all. I wish you could layer the color more easily but I have still been using this lip color on the daily.

Full Size: $7

Check out NYX’s Liquid Suede Lipsticks here

Overall, I am happily surprised by this month’s bag. I didn’t think I would like many of these products when I first tried them but after using them for a couple of weeks I find myself reaching for all of the items quite frequently except for the bronzer.

Total price I paid for the bag: $10

Total value of the bag: $45.65

Morphe Brushes Review (35O, 35P and 35B)

morphe sun edit

There has been so much hype recently about the Morphe 35O palette and Morphe shadows in general that I decided to make my first purchase and boy am I happy I did! Shipping didn’t take too long (about a week and a half) and everything was tightly wrapped in bubble wrap when it arrived. I have never seen a cracked Morphe shadow and I’m guessing that is why! I decided to order the 35O, 35P and 35B palettes for a bit of variety. All shadows are creamy, pigmented, easy to blend and long lasting (with one exception in the 35P which I mention below!). The only down side is the size of the palettes as they would be inconvenient to travel with but this isn’t a concern of mine. Below I have inserted a picture of each palette with stars next to each of my favorite shades that I feel are unique or that I use frequently. All of the matte and shimmer shades are fantastic but I didn’t want to star every shadow so I narrowed it down to a select few. I have also provided swatches of each row in daylight (left) and flash (right) so you would be able to see them on my skin. They are all one swipe swatches so the pigmentation is pretty impressive!

35P favorites
35P favorites are indicated by the black stars. The shadow with the white star is the only color in all of the palettes that I was disappointed with. It felt rough and gritty and had a patchy application. HOWEVER, it was pigmented and the swatch looks nice. I need to play with this shadow more but I just wanted to make a note of the difference!

35B favorites
35B favorites are indicated by the black stars. Not as many standouts in this palette for me but that is because the colors are not ones I will be reaching for every day. Nonetheless, all of the shadows swatched beautifully and the pigmentation is amazing!

I definitely recommend these eyeshadows! They are hands down the nicest ones in my collection and I’ve been able to create such a variety of looks! The 35P ended up being my favorite palette with the 35O as a close second. Please let me know either by commenting on this blog or my instagram if you found this review helpful, if you have any Morphe products or if you plan on buying any! 🙂

February Ipsy Glam Bag Review

feb ipsy bag

This is my 4th month of receiving my Ipsy glam bag and I am definitely loving this one! The bag itself has a fun graphic design on the front (that Michelle Phan helped design!). I am billed $10 on the 1st of every month and typically receive my bag by the 15th. Below is my review of the 5 products I received!

  • I have linked the websites of the companies and any other products I have talked about in this blog! They are linked through the green “here”. Just click on it and it will take you to the site! 🙂

Luxie Beauty – Small Tapered Blending Eye Brush 231 ($12)

This blending brush is AMAZING!!! I have yet to invest in high quality makeup brushes and now I know why they are so different. The bristles are extremely soft, it blends like a dream and most importantly (for me) it will apply Colourpop shadows! I love Colourpop’s eye shadows but not being able to apply them with most brushes can be very frustrating. This one picks up the shadows and applies them like a dream. I am so happy with this brush and I cannot wait to play around with my Colourpop shadows more!!

Check out Luxie Beauty here

Check out Colourpop here

theBalm Cosmetics – Mary-Lou Manizer  (Full size $24)

As an avid YouTube makeup tutorial watcher, I have heard just about every guru rave about this highlighter. While I do prefer a more dramatic highlight, this one is just perfect for subtle makeup days or for someone who wants a minimal glow. It honestly makes you look like you are glowing from within which is nice, especially if you didn’t get much sleep the night before!

Natural light

Paula Dorf – Baby Eyes Enhancer (Full size $20)

This eyeliner is your typical waterline eye brightening color. I have nothing bad to say about this product but it is practically identical to the Rimmel ScandalEyes liner in Nude which is less than $5!! I would suggesting picking up that nude liner at your local drugstore instead 😉

Check out Paula Dorf here

Rimmel ScandalEyes in Nude here

UPDATE: I swatched these two eyeliners side-by-side and noticed that the Rimmel one is a bit more yellow toned while the Paula Dorf one is more of a salmon color. HOWEVER, when I tried to remove them with a makeup wipe, the Paula Dorf eyeliner came off right away while the Rimmel one did NOT budge! I was very impressed! Drugstore for the win!

VINTAGE by Jessica Liebeskind – Sparkling Lipgloss in Pink Sequin (Full size $21)

This lipgloss is a pretty light pink gloss with a slight sparkle. I don’t see myself wearing this everyday but it is gorgeous in the center of your lips for a highlight. I was thrown off by the brush but the bristles are actually quite stiff which is good because it makes for easy application. While I would probably not repurchase this, I think I will enjoy it for special occasions.

Perfectly Posh – BFF Best Face Forever Exfoliating Daily Face Wash (Full size $21)

I have heard so many great things about this face wash but unfortunately, the exfoliating beads were too harsh on my sensitive skin. There is no way I could use this daily but I’m sure it would be amazing if you aren’t super sensitive like me. It made your face feel fresh and left a slight minty tingle which I enjoyed. I still haven’t found an affordable face wash/cleanser so if anyone has any good suggestions for sensitive skin I’d love to know in the comments!

Check out Perfectly Posh here

Total price I paid for the bag: $10

Total value of the bag: ~$98 (using the full size product estimations)

I cannot be happier with the value of my bag this month! I will use all of the products and I will definitely be reusing this bag! (They work great for traveling!) If you want to sign up for a monthly subscription with Ipsy, please use my referral link here and we both get points toward an extra product in our bags 🙂

Welcome to Learning to Love Leah!

I cannot believe I am finally posting my first blog!! Since I started college in 2013, I have enjoyed watching YouTube videos, vlogs and reading blogs. So, now three years later, I have decided to start my own blog! I am a twenty year old college student and part-time nursing assistant.  School has consumed most of my life for years and recently I have been learning how to relax and find joy outside of academics. Through this blog I hope to document the new and exciting moments of my life as I explore myself. I have recently developed a fascination with fashion and beauty, discovering a creative side I thought I had lost in elementary school. I have gained confidence in traveling and am loving exploring nature and new places. I have found motivation to get dressed, clean my apartment and take care of my body.

These changes did not happen overnight but took time. As I mentioned previously, I have always succeeded in school. But, to do so, I focused all of my energy in my assignments. I would study for hours, days, weeks and still not feel confident in knowing the material. I have vivid memory of doing my homework and sobbing (as young as middle school) because I felt as if I had no energy and no motivation but my conscience would not let me stop. My brain felt as if it was being assaulted but I had a loving family, wonderful friends and was successful. Nothing made sense. It began to get too overwhelming and in high school I started distancing myself from everyone, pouring more time into my challenging class schedule. After still struggling to find happiness in college, I accepted the help of a counselor and was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder and mild depression. When the sessions weren’t enough I began medication to clear my mind of the fog that had taken residence there for years. I still have bad days but I am finding myself happier than I have been in years. I am proud of myself and where I am going with my life. My family, boyfriend and dog (yes, my dog has helped me in SO many ways!) have been my biggest support through everything and I am so grateful for each and every one of them.

With all that aside, this blog will not focus on my anxiety and depression. I am realizing that I am much more than those two words and plan to focus on the positivity of my life. Since I have finally acquired a professional quality camera (Best Christmas gift ever from my boyfriend!) I feel prepared to take another leap in my life and start this lifestyle blog. I would love to take you along for my journey in self-discovery as I learn to love Leah.
